Cat abscess treatment cost in the UK

Bite abscesses are one of the most common reasons cats that go outdoors end up at the vet, often flaring as a painful swelling seemingly overnight. Because they tend to appear in the evening or at the weekend, many owners first see an out-of-hours vet. The real prices below show what treatment typically costs.

The quick version

  • An abscess is a pocket of infection from a bite wound, usually needing draining as well as antibiotics and pain relief.
  • Many abscesses need sedation or a short anaesthetic so the vet can open, clean and flush the wound properly.
  • Because they flare quickly, the first visit is often to an out-of-hours vet, which usually costs more than a daytime appointment.
  • Neutering reduces roaming and fighting, which is the single best way to prevent repeat abscesses.

Why the price varies so much

A small abscess caught early might need only draining, antibiotics and pain relief, while a large or burst one can need sedation, a general anaesthetic, a surgical drain and a follow-up visit, which pushes the cost up considerably. The biggest single factor is often timing: an out-of-hours vet on an evening or weekend charges more than the same treatment during normal opening hours. How poorly your cat is, whether a drain is placed, and the number of follow-ups all add up, as does where you go. Corporate-owned practices charged about 18.3% more on average than independents in the 2026 review, and vet fees rose roughly 63% between 2016 and 2023.

How to pay less

  • If your cat is stable and comfortable, a daytime appointment is usually cheaper than an out-of-hours vet, though never delay care for a cat that is clearly unwell or in pain.
  • Neuter your cat, as this reduces the roaming and fighting that cause most bite abscesses in the first place.
  • Ask for a written prescription for any antibiotics or pain relief and check online pharmacy prices.
  • Compare local practices, and consider pet insurance given that the average claim in 2024 was around £685.

Common questions

Can a cat abscess heal without a vet?

It is not wise to leave one. An abscess sometimes bursts and drains on its own, but the infection often lingers and comes back, and your cat is in pain in the meantime. A vet can drain and flush it properly and provide pain relief and antibiotics, which resolves it faster and more reliably than hoping it clears alone.

Why is out-of-hours treatment more expensive?

Overnight and weekend care costs more because practices have to staff and run a clinic outside normal hours, with a vet and nurse on hand for emergencies. If your cat is stable and comfortable, a daytime appointment usually costs less, but a cat that is in obvious pain, off its food or unwell should be seen without delay.

How can I stop my cat getting abscesses?

Neutering is the most effective step, as it cuts down the territorial roaming and fighting that lead to bite wounds. Keeping cats in overnight, when many fights happen, also helps. If your cat is a repeat fighter, checking any new lumps or sore patches early means smaller, cheaper treatment before a full abscess develops.
