RVHD2 in rabbits: why the annual booster matters and what it costs

RVHD2 is the newer strain of rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease, and it has caught out plenty of owners who thought their rabbit was already protected. It can spread on shoes, hay, insects and even the wind, so indoor house rabbits are not safe either. The real prices below show what UK vets are charging to keep rabbits covered against it.

The quick version

  • RVHD2 is a separate strain, and older single-strain vaccines did not always protect against it.
  • The virus needs no direct contact to spread, so house rabbits still need the jab.
  • Modern combined vaccines cover myxomatosis and both RVHD strains in one annual dose.
  • Missing the yearly booster can mean starting the whole course again at extra cost.

Why the price varies so much

Prices move depending on whether your vet uses an all-in-one vaccine or gives RVHD2 as a standalone top-up alongside a separate myxomatosis and RVHD1 jab. Two appointments naturally cost more than one. There is also the wider market picture. UK vet prices climbed about 63% between 2016 and 2023, and rabbit vaccines rose along with everything else. Corporate-owned clinics tend to sit at the higher end, with the CMA putting them around 18.3% above independents in 2026, so where you go makes a real difference to the bill.

How to pay less

  • Ask whether your practice uses a single combined jab, which avoids paying for two visits.
  • Compare an independent vet nearby, as they were found to be noticeably cheaper on average.
  • Keep the booster on schedule so you avoid a full and pricier restart course.
  • Check if a local rescue or rabbit-welfare event runs subsidised vaccination days.

Common questions

Do indoor rabbits need the RVHD2 vaccine?

Yes. RVHD2 can travel on clothing, shoes, hay, plants and biting insects, so a rabbit that never goes outside can still be exposed. Vets recommend the same annual protection for house rabbits as for outdoor ones.

Is RVHD2 included in the normal rabbit jab?

It depends on the vaccine your practice stocks. Many now use a combined product covering myxomatosis and both RVHD strains in a single shot, but some still give RVHD2 as a separate booster. Ask your vet which they use.

What happens if I miss the annual RVHD2 booster?

Protection fades over the year, leaving your rabbit vulnerable. Depending on how late you are, your vet may need to restart the course rather than give a single top-up, which costs more, so it is worth keeping to the date.
