What's included in a cat spay price at UK vets

When you get a price for spaying your cat, it is worth knowing what sits behind the number. A spay is an abdominal operation, not a quick procedure, so the fee covers anaesthetic, surgery and recovery care rather than just theatre time. Understanding the breakdown makes it easier to compare quotes fairly. The real prices below show what practices near you charge.

The quick version

  • A cat spay is a full abdominal operation, so the price reflects anaesthetic and aftercare, not just the surgery.
  • Most quotes include the pre-op check, the anaesthetic, the operation and a post-op recheck.
  • Pain relief to take home and a buster collar or medical pet shirt are sometimes extra.
  • A pregnant or in-season cat, or a very large one, can cost more because the surgery is more involved.

Why the price varies so much

The headline figure depends on what the practice folds into it and on your cat's circumstances. A standard quote generally covers the pre-anaesthetic assessment, the anaesthetic itself, the spay and a follow-up visit, but some clinics charge separately for take-home pain relief or a recovery collar. If your cat is pregnant, in season or overweight, the operation carries more risk and takes longer, which lifts the price. Where you go matters too: the CMA found in 2026 that corporate practices charged about 18.3% more than independents, and vet prices have risen 63% since 2016. From September 2026, practices must publish their price lists, which will make it far easier to see exactly what a spay quote includes.

How to pay less

  • Ask for an itemised quote so you can see whether pain relief and a collar are included or added on.
  • Book the spay before your cat comes into season or gets pregnant, when the operation is simpler and cheaper.
  • Compare an independent practice with a corporate-owned one, using the real prices below.
  • Check whether a charity scheme or low-cost neutering voucher applies if money is tight.

Common questions

Does a cat spay quote include pain relief and a collar?

Often, but not always. Many practices include take-home pain relief and a recovery collar, while others list them separately. Ask for an itemised quote so a lower headline price doesn't turn out dearer once the extras are added.

Why does spaying a pregnant cat cost more?

Because the surgery is more complex and higher risk, taking more time and anaesthetic. Spaying before a cat comes into season or falls pregnant is both cheaper and simpler, so it is worth booking early.

Will published price lists show what a spay includes?

That is the aim. From September 2026, practices must publish price lists, which should make it clearer what each spay quote covers and easier to compare clinics. Until then, ask for an itemised quote and check the real prices below.
