Puppy vaccination cost in the UK: what you'll actually pay

A puppy's first vaccinations are one of the earliest bills a new owner faces, and the price swings more than most people expect. The initial course is normally two injections given a few weeks apart, covering the core diseases plus leptospirosis. The real prices below show what practices near you are charging right now, not a national average that tells you nothing about your own postcode.

The quick version

  • The primary course is two injections, usually started at eight to nine weeks and finished two to four weeks later.
  • Many practices bundle both jabs into one upfront price, which tends to work out cheaper than paying for two separate consultations.
  • Corporate-owned surgeries charge on average 18.3% more than independents for the same work (CMA), so it pays to compare before you book.
  • Vet prices rose 63% between 2016 and 2023 (CMA), so a figure you remember from a previous dog is out of date.
  • Your puppy is not fully protected until roughly a week after the second injection, so plan the timing before booking classes or walks.
  • From September 2026, practices must publish their price lists, which should make comparing quotes far easier than it is today.

Why the price varies so much

Two puppies on the same street can be quoted very different prices for identical jabs, and ownership is the biggest single factor behind that. The Competition and Markets Authority found that corporate-owned practices charge around 18.3% more than independents for comparable work, and that vet prices overall rose 63% between 2016 and 2023, so the gap has been widening for a while rather than staying fixed. Location matters too: city-centre surgeries carry higher rent and staffing overheads than rural ones, and that gets passed on in the price of a routine appointment. What's included in the quote also varies a lot. Some practices fold in the first health check and a free follow-up consultation, while others itemise every part separately, so a low headline figure can hide extras that only show up on the invoice. From September 2026 all practices must publish their price lists, which should strip out a lot of this guesswork and let owners compare like for like before they book rather than after.

How to pay less

  • Ask whether the quote covers both injections and the initial health check, or just the first jab, before you commit to anything.
  • Ring two or three practices, including at least one independent, since the 18.3% corporate premium is real money on a puppy budget.
  • Check if a puppy or wellness plan spreads the first-year costs and includes the primary course at a discount, rather than paying two separate bills.
  • Rescue and charity puppies sometimes come part-vaccinated, so confirm exactly what has already been done and only pay for what is left.
  • Once price lists are published from September 2026, ask to see one before you book rather than finding out the total at the till.
  • Book the second jab at the same time as the first if the practice lets you, some hold the price rather than charging a fresh consultation fee for the follow-up.

Common questions

How many vaccinations does a puppy need?

The primary course is two injections. The first is usually given at eight to nine weeks and the second two to four weeks later. After that your dog needs regular boosters through its life to keep the protection topped up, which is a separate ongoing cost from the puppy course itself.

Can I walk my puppy before the vaccinations are finished?

Not on the ground in public places. Full protection kicks in around a week after the second jab. Until then you can carry your puppy outside and let it socialise in safe, clean gardens with vaccinated dogs.

Is it cheaper to buy the vaccines and do it myself?

In practice, no. Buying prescription vaccines without a vet is difficult, and you lose the health check that comes with the appointment. The saving is not worth the risk of storing or giving them wrongly, and most practices won't sell you the vaccine without administering it themselves anyway.

Do boosters cost the same as the puppy course?

Not usually, boosters are billed separately from the primary puppy course and the price varies by practice. Ask what the annual booster costs at the same time you book the initial jabs, so the puppy price you're quoted isn't the only figure you need to budget for.

Are puppy vaccinations covered by pet insurance?

Most standard pet insurance policies don't cover routine vaccinations, because they're a planned, preventable cost rather than an accident or sudden illness. A small number of policies include a wellness add-on that reimburses some of it, so check your policy wording or ask the insurer directly before assuming it's included.

What happens if I miss the second vaccination appointment?

Leave it too long and some practices will ask you to restart the whole course, which means paying for both jabs again. Ring the practice as soon as you know you'll miss the slot, most will rebook within a short window at no extra charge, but the exact cut-off differs between practices, so ask rather than assume.

Sources & method

This guide is built from 35 real UK vaccination prices, collected 2025–2026. Each one — what it was, where, when, and its source — is listed individually on the vaccination price page. We report medians (the middle price), never estimates, and no business pays to appear or to change a figure.
