DATA-BACKED GUIDE · UPDATED JULY 2026
How much does embalming cost in the UK, and do you need it?
Embalming, sometimes called hygienic treatment, is an optional extra rather than a legal requirement for most funerals. It is often added to a quote by default, which is why it is worth asking about early. Knowing the price, and whether you actually want it, can save an unnecessary cost at a hard time.
The quick version
- Embalming is optional and not needed for most funerals, including every direct cremation.
- Embalming is sometimes added to quotes by default, so check whether it is on yours.
- Embalming is more likely to be suggested if there will be an open-coffin viewing or a longer gap before the funeral.
- Refrigeration is the usual alternative and is standard care at no embalming cost.
- The Standardised Price List shows the fee, so you can see it and decline if you wish.
Published and surveyed prices
Why the price varies so much
Whether you are charged for it at all is the first variable, since it is optional and some quotes include it while others do not. Beyond that, the fee is set by the funeral director and reflects their own pricing, so it differs between firms. It is more commonly recommended when there is an open-coffin viewing or a longer wait before the service, and less relevant for a quick direct cremation. As with the coffin, the published price list lets you see the charge and turn it down if it is not for you.
How to pay less
- Ask whether embalming is included in your quote, and have it removed if you do not want it.
- Decline it for a direct cremation, where it serves no purpose.
- Ask whether simple refrigeration will do instead, which it usually will.
- Only agree to it if you are planning a viewing and feel it matters to you.
- Check the price on the Standardised Price List rather than accepting it as automatic.
- Question any quote that lists embalming as standard, since it is not.
Common questions
Is embalming required by law?
No. Embalming is optional and not legally required for a normal funeral. It is most often suggested where there will be a viewing or a longer delay, and it is never needed for a direct cremation.
What is the alternative to embalming?
Refrigeration is the standard alternative and is part of normal care. For most funerals it is perfectly sufficient, so you can decline embalming without worry.
Why is embalming on my quote when I did not ask for it?
Some funeral directors include it by default. You are free to have it removed. Check the Standardised Price List for the fee and decide for yourself rather than accepting it automatically.
