How much does a headstone cost?

A headstone, or grave marker, is the memorial that marks the resting place. It is usually bought separately from the funeral, often weeks later, once the family has had time to think. Prices range widely with the size, the stone and how much engraving you want. A small flat bronze marker sits at the low end, and a large upright granite monument at the high end. Where you buy it matters too, because the cemetery's preferred supplier is not always the cheapest.

The quick version

  • The headstone is normally a separate purchase, so it does not have to be decided in the first rushed days.
  • Price depends on size, material, whether it lies flat or stands upright, and the amount of engraving.
  • The cemetery's own supplier is often pricier than an independent monument dealer.
  • Cemeteries may charge a setting or foundation fee to install the marker, which is easy to miss.
  • Eligible veterans can receive a government-provided headstone or marker at no cost.

Why the price varies so much

The cost of a headstone tracks the amount of stone and the amount of work. A small flat marker in granite or bronze uses little material and simple lettering, so it stays affordable. A large upright monument, a double marker for a couple, or a design with a carved portrait or fine detail uses far more of both, and the price rises steeply. Then the seller matters, because the cemetery's approved supplier often charges more than an independent dealer, and the cemetery may add a fee just to set the marker on its foundation.

How to pay less

  • Get quotes from an independent monument dealer as well as the cemetery's supplier, since prices differ a lot.
  • Choose a flat marker over a large upright monument if it suits, as it costs considerably less.
  • Keep the engraving simple, because extra lettering, portraits and emblems add to the price.
  • Ask the cemetery about its setting or foundation fee up front so it does not surprise you.
  • Check veterans benefits, which can supply a bronze or granite marker for an eligible person at no charge.
  • Buy after the funeral, not during it, so you have time to compare rather than deciding under pressure.

Common questions

Do I have to buy the headstone from the cemetery?

Usually not. Most cemeteries let you use an independent monument dealer, though they may set rules on size and material and charge a fee to install it. Comparing dealers can save a lot.

When should I buy the headstone?

There is no rush. Many families order the marker weeks or months after the funeral, which gives you time to compare suppliers and choose the wording carefully rather than deciding while grieving.

Why is one headstone so much more than another?

Size, material and engraving. A small flat marker costs far less than a large upright granite monument, and detailed carving or portraits add more on top.

Can a veteran get a free headstone?

Yes. The government provides a headstone or marker at no cost for eligible veterans, whether they are buried in a national cemetery or a private one. Ask the funeral home or the VA.
